We were hooked the first time we visited Southern Oregon. The people, the climate, the community, the fishing; all contributed to why we decided to move here. Southern Oregon is best know for its incredible quality of life which has converted many a tourist, like us, to full time resident. An easy 5 hour drive south of Portland and 6 hours north of San Francisco we are located just a stones throw away from California.

Depending on the time of the year, the Rogue River offers fishermen countless fishing options. Among the most renowned rivers in the West, the Rogue offers exceptional fishing for steelhead (winter & summer), salmon (chinook/coho) and resident rainbow trout throughout the year. The salmon-fly hatch in May is the best time to catch these trout on dry flies. Winter Steelhead fishing is best between January and April. Spring Chinook fishing is best from June to August. Coho is best around mid October. Summer Steelhead fishing heats up in July and runs until the end of the year. Both traditional nymph fishing and Spey rod swing fishing techniques are used and produce good results. There are many reasons why the Rouge River is legendary and considered a must stop on the "Bucket-list" for fly-fisherman. One of best reasons is that you can catch anadromous fish any month of the year. The best fishing times for your targeted species are listed below.
Summer Steelhead: July-December
Spring Chinook: June-August
Winter Steelhead: January-April
Trout: year-round fishing
We think Southern Oregon is an amazing place with many treasures to share. It has a relatively new but thriving wine industry voted one of the top 10 destinations for wine lovers in the world in 2016.
There are over 175 vineyards here so there is plenty of opportunity to drink some world class wines. At the 2016 World Beer Cup, a competition of the best beers and breweries in the United States, Southern Oregon's Caldera Brewing Company, was chosen the best brewery in Oregon with its Ashland Amber and Lawnmover Lager selections. In addition, we are fortunate to have the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, the largest in the country, based in Ashland Oregon, 13 miles from Medford. The festival runs from March to September.
Make no mistake, the real draw to Southern Oregon are its countless lakes and waterways and none is more famous than the mighty Rogue River. The Rogue starts near Crater Lake, the only National Park in Oregon, in the Cascade Mountains. Crater Lake is the deepest lake in the United States and collects over 40 feet of snowfall each winter. From its headwaters above Lost Creek Reservoir the Rogue River meanders 160 miles thru several mountain ranges to the Pacific Ocean. In 2010 after the last two remaining man-made dams were removed, the Rogue again flowed completely free for the first time in 105 years. Salmon and steelhead runs benefitted greatly and now are arguably some of the healthiest on the entire west coast. If fact, in the spring of 2016 a record 32lb Giant Winter Steelhead was recorded at the Cole River Hatchery on the Upper Rogue River. Wow!
